Physical Education

Physical education develops the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding, so that they can perform with increasing competence and confidence in a range of physical activities. Physical education promotes an understanding in children of their bodies in action. It involves thinking, selecting and applying skills and promotes positive attitudes towards a healthy lifestyle. Thus we enable them to make informed choices about physical activity throughout their lives.

As required in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 children have the opportunity to participate in an indoor PE skills session based around Real PE and an outdoor sports session based around the skills taught from Real PE. These sports include tag rugby, hockey, netball, cricket, football and athletics. Alongside this, , children have the opportunity to experience specialist teaching or a sport. In year 1 and year 2, all children are taught tennis at Delta tennis, in year 4 and year 5 all children are taught golf at Broome Manor. Swimming is also taught in year 3 and year 6. where we aim for all children to reach the standard where they are safe and confident in the water.

Planning is based on the Real PE scheme, which all teachers have been introduced to during a whole staff INSET. Planning is also informed by ongoing assessment (based on Real PE requirements) and in order to build upon the prior learning of the children. In term 5 and 6, a specialist teacher from Swindon Dance, supports each staff member to teach high quality Dance lessons.

In all classes there are children of differing physical ability. Whilst recognising this fact, we provide suitable learning opportunities for all children by matching the challenge of the task to the ability of the child. We achieve this through setting tasks of increasing difficulty, where not all children complete all tasks and allowing children to set their own challenges to achieve a personal best.

In EYFS2, we encourage the physical development of our children in the reception class as an integral part of their work. We relate the physical development of the children to the objectives set out in the Early Learning Goals, which underpin the curriculum planning for children aged three to five years of age. We encourage the children to develop confidence and control of the way they move, and the way they handle tools and equipment. We give all children the opportunity to undertake activities that offer appropriate physical challenge, both indoors and outdoors, using a wide range of resources to support specific skills. This is also supported by the Real PE scheme. Each day children are encouraged to take part in a daily mile which they complete outside of their physical education sessions.

In addition to curriculum provision, our intent is to provide children with opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities that are inclusive, free of charge, enjoyable and increase children’s physical activity.

Our physical education is planned to support and establish a seamless progression through the school. When the children reach the end of their primary school journey, they will have acquired, improved and embedded a range of personal, social, cognitive, creative, physical and health and fitness skills and will understand the benefits of being healthy. Through pupil voice, the children have expressed how much they have enjoyed opportunities for participation in PE as well as extra-curricular activities and competitions or festivals.

Due to the practical nature of physical education the monitoring of this subject takes various forms. A key component is pupil voice alongside their PE Learning journey. School leaders use these to ensure children have the opportunity to develop the full range of skills applied in a variety of sports. Through these discussions, children are able to demonstrate how they ‘know more and remember more’.

Extra-curricular activities

We promote a wide range of activities for pupils of all ages. The school provides a range of PE-related activities throughout the academic year including football, street hockey, gymnastics, netball, multi-sports and tag rugby for children at the end of the school day. These encourage children to further develop their skills in a range of the activity areas. The school sends details of the current club activities to parents at the beginning of each term.

This year the PE related extra curricular activities we have provided are:

  • Key Stage 1 football (mixed) in association with Soccer & Sporting Excellence
  • Key Stage 2 football (boys) in association with Soccer & Sporting Excellence
  • Key Stage 2 Dance(mixed)  in association with Fortius PE
  • Key Stage 1 Dance (mixed) in association with Fortius PE

Competition

Children represent the school in a range of participation and competitive tournaments and festivals. Children are selected by the PE teacher and PE Subject Leader.

Participation events allow children the opportunity to play, irrespective of their skill levels. Wherever possible, all learners wishing to participate will be given an opportunity to take part during their time at King William Street.

Tournaments with competitive elements will enable children to put into practice the skills that they have developed in their lessons. These opportunities foster a sense of team spirit and co-operation amongst our children. Children selected for competitions will be selected by ability of skills required.

This year King William Street  participated in the following events:
