Remote Learning
How does my child access home learning?
To facilitate remote learning, King William Street CE Primary School will be using Purple Mash, a cloud-based platform for primary-aged children. The advantage of Purple Mash is that it is ‘multi-platform’ meaning children can complete work on iPads, Chrome books or PCs and activities can be accessed at any time by staff and children.
By using Purple Mash staff will be able to set tasks/activities for individuals, groups or the whole class in the form of ‘2Do’s’. In addition, staff will be able to:
- Set deadlines for work to be completed if required
- Give feedback to your child on the work they have completed
- Give rewards
- Create and upload their own resources such as word mats, number lines as well as pre-recorded audio/video instructions for the tasks/activities.
Please note that if using an Apple device, you may need to use 'Google Chrome' browser when accessing any pre-recorded videos.
How does Purple Mash work?
Your child will be provided with their own individual login to access Purple Mash. Once set up, teachers can view their classes, which contain the work folders of all their children. They will set which will pop-up on the screen when your child logs in, so it is clear which tasks need to be completed. In addition, your child can freely use any of the creative tools for writing, digital painting, coding, blogging etc. and play Maths and English games.
My child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education?
We recognise that some children may not have suitable online access at home. If your child is unable to access online learning via a tablet, laptop, PC or Chromebook, please contact Mrs Clarke, via her email,head@kingwilliamstreet.co.uk as soon as possible so we can offer you child one of the following options:
- The school will lend a laptop to your child to use for the period of remote learning. Before lending the laptop, we will ensure that it is set up to access wifi at home.
- The school will provide a free Vodafone sim card which will enable you to use free wifi.
- The school will provide paper-based printed resources for your child to write on/use. These resources will be delivered to your home by a staff member as soon as possible.
What are the remote learning expectations?
We aim to teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school. Meaningful activities from a variety of different subjects will be included with a daily focus on reading, writing, mathematics, phonics/spelling.
We expect your child to engage and complete their remote education as they would if they were in school. If your child is ill, you would need to inform the school as normal.
We expect every parent to support their child to both access and complete their remote education on a daily basis.
To help with this, we have found that children benefit from routine so you could draw up a timetable which allocates time during each day to complete set tasks. You could use the timetable the teacher uses in school or you could devise your own such as:
8:00 am - Get up and dressed
9:00 am - Maths based activity
10:00 am – Reading activity
10:20 am - Snack
10:30 am - English based activity
11:30 am – Phonics/spelling
12:15 pm - Lunch
1:00 pm - Topic-based activity
2:30 pm – Read a story together
At school, your child is used to seeing a visual timetable on the wall so you could do the same.
How will you support my child whilst they are remote learning?
To support remote learning, we will use a combination of high-quality online and offline resources and short teaching videos. These will provide frequent, clear explanations of new content and will be either delivered by the class teacher or through other high-quality curriculum resources.
These activities will be planned and well-sequenced so that knowledge and skills are built incrementally, with a good level of clarity about what is intended to be taught and practised in each subject.
We expect that remote education activities/tasks set (including remote teaching and independent work) will be of an equivalent length to the core teaching received in school. Approximately 3 and 4 hours per day depending on your child’s age, stage of development or special educational needs.
Each class teacher will provide age-appropriate activities as shown in the table below. Our SENDCO, Mrs Hill, will work closely with teachers to ensure that children with an EHCP are provided with suitable learning.
Your child will be provided with:
• Four maths activities with accompanying recorded teacher led explanation for the maths focus of the week.
• Four deliberate maths activities using NumBots.
• Daily phonics lessons using Letters and Sounds videos with accompanying activities.
• Daily reading activities linked to comprehension and phonics.
• Three topic activities with accompanying teacher led explanation of the topic focus for the week.
• One PE activity.
• One RE activity.
Your child will be provided with:
• Four maths 'Do it, Use it, Own it' activities with accompanying recorded teacher led explanations.
• Four deliberate maths activities using NumBots.
• Daily phonics lessons using Letters and Sounds videos with accompanying activities.
• One reading activity linked to comprehension.
• One grammar and one sentence activity with accompanying recorded teacher led explanations.
• Three topic activities with accompanying recorded teacher led explanation/PowerPoint/video link.
• One PE activity.
• One RE activity.
Your child will be provided with:
• Four maths 'Do it, Use it, Own it' activities with accompanying recorded teacher led explanations.
• Four Maths on Track activities.

Will you check whether my child is engaging with their work?
Staff will check your child’s engagement with remote education at least once/day and will provide feedback to your child about their work daily using Purple Mash.
Feedback can take many forms and may not always mean extensive written comments for your child. Feedback will be given in the following ways:
- Writing and Mathematics: a general comment and where appropriate, a next step point e.g. ‘Correct Do It 3’ or ‘Read through your writing and check for punctuation.’
- Reading and Topic: a general comment e.g. ‘Well done I enjoyed reading your report’ or ‘You have demonstrated skilful painting’.
- Staff may also use Purple Mash emojis as part of the feedback.
Teachers will adjust the pace or difficulty of what is being taught and where necessary, revise the material or simplify explanations in response to this feedback.
How will I be informed if there are concerns?
When staff have a concern about your child’s engagement, they will contact you within 24 hours and agree on the next steps to put in place.
We also encourage parents to contact the school using head@kingwilliamstreet.co.uk if you have any concerns about the work being too hard, too easy, too much or too little.
How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?
We recognise that some children, for example, those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home.
Our SENDCO, Mrs Hill, will contact all children with an EHCP to discuss access to learning and form an individualised plan. She will also support teachers to adapt remote learning or provide additional resources where needed.
